Frequently Asked Questions

What is hospice care?

Hospice care is specialized medical, emotional, and spiritual support for patients with a life-limiting illness who have a life expectancy of six months or less, as determined by a physician. The focus is on comfort and quality of life, rather than curative treatment.

Who is eligible for hospice care?

Patients are eligible when a doctor certifies that they likely have six months or less to live if the illness runs its usual course. Common conditions include cancer, advanced heart or lung disease, dementia, and other serious illnesses.

How do I start hospice care?

Hospice must be ordered by a physician. Families can call Aspen Grove Hospice directly at (720) 999-9854, and we will work with your doctor to confirm eligibility and begin services quickly.

Where is hospice care provided?

Hospice care is provided wherever the patient lives; at home, in an apartment, assisted living community, skilled nursing facility, or another residence.

Who pays for hospice care?

Hospice care is covered 100% by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. This includes medications, durable medical equipment, supplies, and support services related to the terminal illness.

What does hospice cost out of pocket?

For most patients, there are no out-of-pocket costs for hospice care. Families do not receive bills for covered services, equipment, or medications related to the terminal illness.

What services does hospice provide?

Hospice care includes pain and symptom management, nursing support, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), social workers, chaplains, volunteers, durable medical equipment, medications, caregiver support, and bereavement care for families.

How quickly can hospice care start?

In most cases, hospice services can begin within 24 hours or less once a physician’s order is received. Aspen Grove Hospice responds promptly so families receive the support they need right away.

Can I keep my own doctor?

Yes. Patients can continue seeing their primary care physician or specialists while receiving hospice care. Our hospice medical director works with your doctor to coordinate care.

Can a patient leave hospice care?

Yes. Patients can revoke hospice at any time if they wish to pursue curative treatments again. Hospice care can also be restarted later if needed.

What if my loved one lives longer than six months?

If a patient lives longer than six months but still meets eligibility requirements, hospice care continues. Many patients receive hospice support for longer than six months.

What is included with hospice equipment?

Hospice provides all necessary durable medical equipment (DME) such as hospital beds, oxygen, wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, and pressure-relieving mattresses delivered and set up at no cost to families.

Does hospice provide 24/7 support?

Yes. Aspen Grove Hospice staff are available day or night, 365 days a year. Families can call anytime with questions, emergencies, or care needs.

What does a hospice nurse do?

Hospice nurses manage medications, control pain and symptoms, educate families, and provide hands-on care. They also coordinate with the full care team to ensure seamless support.

What does a hospice social worker do?

Social workers provide counseling, connect families with community resources, help with advance care planning, and support both patients and caregivers emotionally.

What does a hospice chaplain or spiritual counselor do?

Hospice chaplains provide spiritual care based on the patient’s and family’s beliefs. They can offer prayer, support during difficult conversations, or simply be a compassionate listener.

What happens if my loved one passes away at home?

Hospice staff will guide the family through the next steps, provide emotional support, and coordinate with funeral homes. Families never have to go through the process alone.

Does hospice provide support for caregivers?

Yes. Caregiver support is a cornerstone of hospice. Aspen Grove Hospice provides training, counseling, respite support, and resources to help caregivers feel confident and cared for.

How long does bereavement support last?

Aspen Grove Hospice provides at least 12 months of bereavement support for families after a loved one passes away. This may include counseling, support groups, and ongoing check-ins.
